"Everything We're Doing Is Kind of Mediocre"
A brand owner said something on a call recently that I haven't been able to shake.
"Everything we're doing is kind of mediocre."
He didn't say it with frustration. He said it with clarity. Like he'd been circling the truth for a long time and finally landed on the exact words.
His business was doing fine. Revenue was stable. Customers were happy enough. He had B2C and B2B running. Email marketing. Social media. A couple of agencies. Post-purchase flows. Affiliate partnerships.
Everything was getting done. Nothing was getting done well.
His Meta ads were "okay." His email flows were "decent." His product pages were "fine." His retention was "not bad."
I hear some version of this on almost every call with founders between $1M and $5M. The business works, but nothing about it is exceptional. And when nothing is exceptional, there's no compounding. There's no channel or initiative that's pulling away from the pack and driving disproportionate growth.
The instinct at this stage is to add more. Launch TikTok. Hire another agency. Start a podcast. Try a new funnel. If one thing working "okay" isn't enough, surely five things working "okay" will add up.
They don't. Five mediocre efforts don't equal one great one. They equal five things consuming your time, your budget, and your mental bandwidth while producing incrementally diminishing returns.
What the Best Brands at $5M+ Do Differently
The brands I've seen break through this phase all did the same thing. They picked one channel, one strategy, or one initiative and went embarrassingly deep on it. Not "we're testing this." Went all in. Hired for it. Built systems around it. Made it the thing they were best at.
One brand I work with poured 80% of their energy into Meta creative for an entire quarter. Not split across 6 channels. Just Meta creative. By the end of the quarter, they had a creative production system, a testing cadence, and a library of proven winners. That foundation now supports every other channel they run.
Another brand spent 3 months doing nothing but improving their post-purchase email flows. Revenue from returning customers went from 25% to 42% of total. That shift gave them enough margin to acquire customers more aggressively, which unlocked the next level of growth.
These brands ignored other "good ideas" for months. They felt uncomfortable doing it. And they broke through specifically because of that focused commitment.
The Question
Here's what I'd ask you this week:
If you could only work on one part of your business for the next 90 days and had to completely ignore everything else, what would you pick?
Whatever you just answered is probably the thing you should actually be doing. The fact that you're not doing it, because you're spread across 8 other "important" things, is likely the reason growth feels stuck.
Mediocre everywhere is the most expensive place to be. It costs the same amount of time and money as being excellent at one thing, but it produces a fraction of the results.
Know your one thing but struggling to commit to it?
